In 2005 Aeolab worked with UBER, o+a architects
and Principal Builders in San Fransisco to design and deploy a
reactive installation utilizing Krypton gas-filled tubes and motion sensing. Our role comprised materials
consulting, procurement, glass fabrication, hardware design and programming.
Each of the 40 x 4-foot long elements in the installation is a clear glass tube glow Krypton-white,
its brightness controlled by a custom-designed circuit with an integrated motion detector. The behavior of the lighting
elements is independent of one another, making up an entirely distributed system. Each light plays back the most recent
motion triggers from program memory, gradually loosing synchrony with its neighbors until a new visitor
walks by triggering a fresh trail of light.
