To create the centerpiece of their booth at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas,
BMW Group brought together in-house Designworks with the
bespoke textile maker BYBORRE and Aeolab
as design & technology partners. The resulting installation
BMW i Interaction EASE
explores a vision of a near-future autonomous driving interior experience imbued with sensing technologies,
intelligent assistance, luxurious materials and responsive lighting.
In a project spanning several months, the teams worked together to craft and choreograph a unique
interactive sculpture comprised of many custom-designed interconnected components. The technological architecture
underpinning the installation is orchestrated by distributed networked actors via MQTT
and includes eye tracking, voice recognition, gesture detection, large high-resolution HUD, switchable LCD glass,
actuated seating. Roughly 30,000 individually controlled LEDs embedded throughout the translucent dashboard,
intricate hand-crafted wooden flooring and custom-fabricated seats upholstered with one-of-a-kind textiles.
