Geppetto-2 is an AI-infused digital clock that tells time by way of a text fragment generated by the
Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 2
(GPT-2) natural language model. Every minute, the clock generates and displays a unique sentence,
which is the AI model's response to the first line of text featuring the current time.
This project had its start in the Spring of 2019 shortly after GPT-2 was publicly released by the
OpenAI Foundation, as a hardware + software prototype demoed at A Piece of Something Bigger
group show organized by the ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena.
Since then the project evolved into a more high-fidelty prototype with an acrylic enclosure and an
input button that encourages an observer to bookmark AI-generated texts. Some of these musings have
been broadcast on Twitter by @gepetto_2.
While the intention of the project is to live on in the daily life setting of 2021 and beyond,
the pre-trained GPT-2 model residing inside the clock will forever remain a time capsule of the ephemera
of online conversations circa 2019.
